Business Credit vs Personal Credit: What's the Difference?

August 01, 20261 min read

Personal credit and business credit serve related but different purposes.

Personal credit reflects an individual's history of managing consumer financial obligations. Business credit relates to the credit history and financial obligations associated with a company.

Personal credit reporting commonly involves consumer bureaus such as Equifax, Experian, and TransUnion. Commercial credit information may involve organizations such as Dun & Bradstreet, Experian Business, and Equifax Business.

Are They Completely Separate?

Not necessarily. Some business financing products require personal guarantees or evaluate an owner's personal credit. Others may place greater emphasis on business revenue, cash flow, business credit, or other factors. The exact underwriting process depends upon the provider and product.

Why Build Business Credit?

Developing a business credit history may help establish the company's financial identity and demonstrate its ability to manage commercial obligations. But separating finances doesn't mean owners can ignore personal credit. Both can matter.

Think Beyond the Score

Rather than chasing a particular score, focus on creating a financially credible company.
